Get warned when you hit the Caps lock key unknowingly in Vista

We've all done it, hit the Caps Lock key by mistake and typed several words or sentences all in upper case capital letters. This is annoying and also, hitting the Caps Lock key while inputting your passwords can result in confusing login errors.

Windows Vista has an option that can help you avoid these errors.

Turning on the "ToggleKeys" option configures the keyboard so that an audible warning sounds every time the user hits the Caps Lock, Num Lock or Scroll Lock keys.

Here is how to enable ToggleKeys:

Open the Windows Vista Control Panel (Click "Start" and then "Control Panel").

It should say Control Panel Home and Classic View to the top left corner, make sure you click on Classic View.

  1. Double Click "Ease of Access Centre'

  2. Scroll down to the 'Make the keyboard easier to use'
  3. Put a tick in 'Turn on Toggle Keys'
  4. Remoe the tick from Turn on Toggle keys by holding down the Num Lock key for 5 seconds
  5. Click Save then close the Control Panel.

The keyboard will now "beep" at you when you press the Caps Lock, Num Lock or Scroll Lock keys. The beep has a different tone depending on whether the key has been turned on or off.

To turn off this ToggleKeys function simply reverse the procedure outlined above by removing the tick in "Use ToggleKeys" checkbox.

Install Telnet client in Vista

This is a quick one.

The Telnet client in Vista is accessible via the DOS prompt by simply entering TELNET and return. BUT the client isn't installed by default, it's easily added though and you shouldn't need your Vista disk or any downloads.

Simply :

1. Click Start then select Control Panel.

2. Select Programs and Features.

3. Select Turn Windows features on or off. (The list can take a short while to pop up)

4. Select the Telnet Client option.

5. Click OK.

6. A dialog box will appear asking you to confirm the installation. The telnet command should now be available.
